This is an excerpt from the manual of MailStore Server, the leading e-mail archiving solution for small and midsized businesses.

PDF Manual

Indexing File Attachments

By default, file attachments are not included when searching e-mails archived with MailStore Client. However, in MailStore Server under Administrative Tools, the file types of attachments to be indexed can be specified. By indexing, the contents of file attachments are included in the MailStore search.

Please proceed as follows:

Using MailStore Client, log on to MailStore Server as administrator.
Click on Administrative Tools and then on Index Options.

Under Attachments, enter the file extensions of the attachments to be included in the search (e.g. "doc xls pdf"). Please note that the notation has to match that of the example.
If the indexing of file attachments is to include e-mails that have already been archived, the index has to be rebuilt: In the current window, select the file group and the user index and click on Rebuild Now. Repeat this process for each file group and each user index within the file group. This is not necessary if no e-mails have been archived yet. In this case, the attachments are indexed automatically during the archiving process.

Please note: Specify only those file types for which indexing is sensible. A range of file types that is too broad can have a negative effect on the performance of the search and indexing functions.
